Growing Demand For World’s Biggest Dump Trucks 26/01/2008

In some of the toughest and most rugged and not to mention biggest mines in the world these monster dump trucks are hard at work hauling coal, iron, oil sands, copper and gold ore. With truck manufactures like Liebherr riding the wave of the increasing need for 3,650-horsepowered engines that consume 50 gallons of diesel an hour, bodies that hold 400 tons and 13 foot tires, these animals are set to just getting bigger.

Built in Virginia, the dump trucks take 12-16 weeks to make with welders piecing the frame together by hand. Liebherr have seen sales increase by 10-15 percent every year for the last five years. The cost for one of these bad boys is between £2.5 million to $4.3 million and with production shipping out 40 a year, you do the maths. But these guys don’t look like your normal dump trucks. The tires are powered by electric motors not diesel engines, this design means it’s easier to transmit the truck’s horsepower electrically than mechanically.

Unfortunately having a go test driving one of these things is only for the few, as Liebherr’s spokeswoman said, “It’s kind of like driving a two-story house.”
