New Electric Cat Dozer 27/03/2008 Caterpillar unveiled the first ever electric drive dozer this year at ConExpo 2008. The Caterpillar dozer called the D7E comes with a traditional diesel engine but it uses an electric motor and two hydraulic pumps instead of the diesel engine powering the tracks through a torque converter. The two 480V motors alongside three sets of planetary gears power the tracks and makes the transmission 60% fewer parts than normal. By utilizing the torque converter and avoiding any energy loses means the Caterpillar dozer is 10% more productive, even with an almost 4kW down on power. In this way the new Caterpillar dozer D7E by running at lower and more constant speed improves economy and the electric motor retains high efficiency across a wide load/speed range which results in 20% less fuel consumption and 25% more meters per gallon. The Caterpillar D7E dozer also features a 50% increase in the steering performance and electric powered air conditioning and water pump which eliminates the need for belts on the engine. This cuts down on the amount of moving parts in the engine and wear and tear. The Cat dozer is also enhanced with a new, single pillar cab providing amazing visibility and a noise level reduction of 50%. The new features on the Cat dozer go along way to cost cutting on servicing and maintenance as well as fuel efficiency and consumption. Caterpillar also report that the System 1 undercarriage doubles the hydraulic oil life and provides 4,000 hr service life to the oil cooling the alternator and motors, which also reduces the service costs considerably. The D7E is in the heavy weight class of the 60,000 pound weight range and is powered by a Cat C9 engine that comes with 235 horsepower. The electric motor eliminates the traditional transmission because the variable speed electric motors serve the function of a continuously variable transmission. |
