Crawler Dozers First Line Of Defense For Forest Fires 01/12/2007

Forest fires are a major hazard and with the summer approaching, fire stations are readying to fight wildfires like California experienced last year. The first line of defense in forest fires is the crawler dozer. They plow fire lines and fire breaks that help to cut off the blaze and keep it in manageable areas so it will not spread. As you can imagine this presents a unique set of challenges for the dozer and the operator. The rugged dozer needs to work rugged forest areas with smoke and heat. Therefore it is amazing that we haven’t had a dozer that has been designed specifically for this application before. John Deere, the farm equipment manufacturer has partnered with specialty outfitter G.R. Manufacturing Inc. to design a complete customized crawler dozer specifically for the fire industry.

Currently dozers are outfitted with specific applications to help them fight wildfires such as a hydrostatic drive with anti-stall so it can travel faster and pull a plow faster. They are also customized the dozer with a series of guards for the fuel tank, cylinders, lights and grill. And of course the screen is well protected to provide safety from debris for the operator.
