Hybrid Excavators Emerging On To The Market 07/03/2008

Since last year several different excavator manufacturers have introduced various versions of hybrid excavators. Komatsu launched their hybrid hydraulic excavator in Japan and overseas last November which went on the market for a cool $99,000, roughly 20% higher than the current model in that category. The midsize excavator has an electric motor and diesel engine and uses 30% less diesel than the current model. Komatsu the worlds second largest maker of construction machinery had planned to sell a total of 1,500 vehicles in Japan and overseas by the year 2010.

Although they were only awarded a US patent in 2004, the company had been working on hybrid construction vehicles for several years. Other companies hot on the trail of hybrid excavators are Japans’ Kobe Steel and NEDO, (New Energy Development Organization) who are working together under a joint development for a prototype hybrid excavator. New Holland, not to be outdone, already unveiled a prototype hybrid excavator which up’s the anti for Komatsu by offering fuel savings of 40% compared to other diesel only units.
