Features and Options When looking at excavators there are three main components which are all influenced by the type of jobs you’ll be doing.Excavator size- Full sized excavators range in size from eight to 60 tons. The most popular size models are around 20 to 40 tons. The size you need depends on the size and depth of the jobs you will be undertaking. Excavator reach- The “dig depth” is the calculated limit of how deep they can dig, which is usually between 20-25 feet. Other specifications are the reach length, how far the bucket can extend from the base at ground level. This also applies to the loading height which is how high the scoop can reach to dump its contents. These all make a difference when considering the space the excavators will be working in. You don’t want the tail swing of the excavator to bump into anything when it pivots. Bucket size- The bucket capacity can range from less than one cubic foot to over 15 cubic feet. The bucket size depends on what particular material the bucket will be digging or moving. Crushed rock for instance will need a bigger bucket size to handle the large pieces and weight. The right bucket size is important for high productivity; as it is more cost effective to be able to shift more material at a time. Basic features to look for that make excavators safe and easy to use. Ease of use- Ergonomic controls help keep the operator focused for look periods of time. If possible have the main operator check out the feel and comfort of different models to uncover any awkward areas of control. Maintenance- Maintenance is a big part of keeping the excavator’s in safe, working condition. Look for easy access to the engine and hydraulic systems. Depth monitors- Most excavators have GPS or laser-based depth monitors which help determine exact depths or tolerances, especially when working 20’ below ground. |
